Thread: 46" RAF Crash Tender pieces template
25/09/2023 12:56:35

Is it what I would call a proper plan for building a model from scratch and part of the plan is missing?

Alternatively, is it a plan that accompanied a kit? If it is then often details of some parts e.g. bulkheads are not shown.

Details of the Designer or the Supplier of the plan would help greatly.

Thread: Landing Craft October What Size?

Ashley

From your list of wants, I have covered everything except the weight as I have not bothered to weigh the thing myself, indeed I have never weighed any of my models. Indeed one of them was Plaxtol which is my version of David Metcalf's Plaudit. With just the motor batteries, speaker for the sound unit etc., I had visions of the thing sinking but the bathtub test revealed that it sat in the water without even the need to include any ballasting. However, going back to offering in the November 2023 magazine it is a bit heavy as it contains 4 Kg of sheet lead to achieve a Freeboard of 20mm, but on the drawing I have recommended a maximum Freeboard of 30mm as anything above 30mm would (in my opinion) look unrealistic.

18/09/2023 08:08:13

Regarding the Free Plan due to be included within the November 2023 issue of the magazine, and following earlier discussions on this Thread, I have sent an email to Lindsey, the editor including the following two requests:

Calibration Scale(s) in both Metric and Imperial added to the border (Horizontal and Vertical) of each sheet of the Plan: Metric in 25 mm increments with every fourth one identified i.e. 0 - 100 - 200 mm etc on the Bottom and Left Hand edges and Imperial in 1 inch increments with every fourth one identified i.e. 0 - 4 - 8 - 12 inch etc on the Top and Right Hand edges.

Define the Overall (O/A) Length and O/A Beam of the model together with the extremities for each. This would be best done on the Plan View i.e. looking down of the model from above and only needs to be shown once. Both the O/A Length and the O/A Beam should include any protrusions from the main hull. So for Plover the protrusions to be included in the O/A Length are the Pusher Knees and Pads at the Bow and the tip of the Rudder at the Stern. For Plover, the O/A Beam is just the width of the Hull as there are no protrusions but on some models there could be rubbing strakes and/or spray rails that protrude from the Hull.

I would suggest that for anyone to consider purchasing a plan to your design, they would need to see some images of the completed model on water. I scratch build model boats using my own plans and in reality you get so far with the design and then commence the build with the remainder of the design evolving as the build continues. Also as you would be competing against the likes of Sarik Hobbies, your design would I think need to be something unique which is not already covered by the proven designs in the Sarik range,

Hi David

When you say the plan defines the dimensions do you mean that these are actually stated in mm? If so, that's great. The reference scales are good as well. Are they quite long as that provides more accuracy when printing/scaling up. To be honest the overall length and beam are more important especially if indicated by dimension lines as this clarifies where the dimensions relate e.g. inside or outside rubbing strips etc.

I produce my own drawings and don't always draw full size and so when printing at say 120% having reference points/distances is invaluable.

Chris

Yes the o/a length and beam are defined in millimetres just below the title block in David Metcalfe fashion, if you have ever seen any of his plans, I can add the two arrows for these two dimensions when I get the plan back for review. I will also add a dimension for the "recommended freeboard" to the plan, although it is defined in the text covering the build.

The two scales cover the full length/height of my plan sheets which I produced at A2. but I expect the version for the mag will be both sides of of A1 or A0. It may be an idea to change my 50 mm increments to 25 mm and possibly add imperial scales (1 inch increments) on the other two edges of what i would call the "drawing blank". Although I have been working in metric (for work related drawings) since about 1967.

The free plan for the November 2023 edition is my creation. Lindsey has the build guide, the images to accompany it and the plan is currently being CADified. The plan defines the hull dimensions i.e. length and beam. There is also a reference scale with increments of 50mm along one long and one short side of the plan. For those interested, is that sufficient information?

Ray - I would be possibly interested in using foam on a future model. Please could you advise the name, type pf adhesive used and method of trimming to the correct profile, Many thanks.

Thread: Model Boats July 2023 Digital Plan Now A4(?) Tiled

Any hint of the model? No, but a lovely looking model which maneuvers very well.

I have included three Calibration Scales i.e. O/A Length, Beam and O/A Height. The latter is not something that is normally quoted on plans in the magazine but if it helps I will also quote the measurement for O/A Height, both on the Plan and within the build notes.

18/08/2023 13:10:07

I am currently tidying up a package i.e plan, build notes and 25 images to go to MB as a free/pull out plan feature. From previous entries on here, and to keep the "digital" people happy I have on the plan defined the Length O/A and Beam dimensions for the model AND a Calibration Scale with 50mm increments at on both axis of the plan. Is that sufficient data or is anything else required?

Thread: Advice about detailing model torpedo boat
28/07/2023 17:03:26

Mike - I am into model boats but nothing painted Battleship Grey, but as you appear to have the use of a computer I suggest a session with Prof. Google and see what he comes up with. I had a search on Motor Torpedo Boat and the first image tht appeared had a a large 102 on the side of the hull. Is that what you are looking for? There is a company called BECC that can supply all types of decal.

You could try contacting the RNLI who may have drawings in their archives which you could purchase or provide a donation. I have seen a clip of a gentleman living (I think) in North America who built an Atlantic Class boat from a set of drawings supplied by RNLI for which he made a donation.

Hi David,

Cervia is 28" X 6.75" at 1- 48th scale and she's at Ramsgate so easy to visit, she's on my list

SARIK sell the plans.

Regards Ray

Ray - Thanks for the info. Models by Design did a semi kit from which Dave Brumstead built the Falconbrook which was Blackboys renamed and with a modified superstructure. So possibly a hull may popup on eBay one day. I have plenty of other models on the "To Do List" in the mean time.

I am just completing my latest creation so will be coming down to Chantry in the near future (a) to join and (b) to take some action shots as I promised Lindsey I would put a set of drawings together plus a build feature, photos etc., for a future edition of MB.

Regards - David Marks

Trevor - In response to your question posted 3 June regarding "correct proportions". This is just maintaining the correct relationship between the hull length and beam. So I require a hull 28 inches long by 8.5 inches beam which by dividing one into the other gives a figure of 3.3. Therefore a hull length of 42 inches would require as beam of 12.7 inches to maintain the correct proportions.

Thread: Squadron Filler
06/06/2023 07:23:39

I have been using Squadron Filler for years but in trying to replenish my stock, it now seems to be unavailable. I have a tube of Humbrol Filler on its way to me but it is worth asking what make/type of Filler do other modellers favour for repairing small blemishes.

Thread: Steam tug
02/06/2023 07:23:47

Trevor/Brian - Yes, the hull is a bit too big and the length/beam proportions are not quite right either.

01/06/2023 22:17:03

Trevor - I may be interested in the GRP hull should it be unsuitable for Brian to use. I am after a tug hull 28 X 8.5 inch beam or of similar proportions.

Often a plan will give you options to go down the "plank on frame" or "bread and butter" route, with plans by David Metcalf being good examples. I intend to try bread and butter for one of my planned models. Obechi and Bass (Limewood) appear to be the preferred timbers to use. Many modellers, me included purchase wood from a company called SLEC as it is always very good quality.

27/05/2023 18:40:32

Check the Sarik Hobbies website. They can supply a wide range of plans for model tugs and many will have featured in MB as a build feature.

Thread: steam sound units
25/05/2023 07:20:45

Hutch - No familiar with that make of sound unit but have found their website and there is is some info there detailing the assembly of a sound unit. If it is not the same unit as your own, you could try contacting the company which is based in Warwickshire.

Thread: Model shop recommendations?
14/05/2023 18:16:29

Andrew - You mentioned your local boating pond so have you tried asking those that use the pond. If it is a club that use it they are normally very helpful. Sadly model shops are getting less and less, so anything recommended to you will (most likely) need to be purchased on line.

We welcome well written contributions from Website members on almost any aspect of Model Boating with a particular emphasis on practical hints, tips, experience and builds.

In order to maintain a consistent standard and format, all suggestions should first be sent to me by Personal Message for approval in principle. Only a very limited amount of time is available for editing contributions into a suitable format for placing on the website so it is important that the material is well presented, lucid and free from obvious spelling errors. I think it goes without saying that contributions should be illustrated by appropriate photos. I shall be happy to give advice on this.

The Member Contribution area offers space for short informative mini articles which would not normally find a place in Model Boats magazine. It is an opportunity for Website Members to freely share their  expertise and experience but I am afraid that virtue is its own reward as there is no budget to offer more material recompense!

I look forward to receiving your suggestions.
