I'm not a tug man myself but I do know that many people have built them as an introduction to the hobby.

I assume you're going electric as opposed to IC or steam ? My initial advice would be to read the instructions twice over and try to match the kit contents to the instructions....before starting work.

No, it's not too early to be thinking about colours especially if you want a scale-looking craft / working boat etc.

Usually, further questions will fall out as you progress - motors, radio, props, rudders and the various control linkages etc. Just ask away there will be a tug expert somewhere on here to help.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I don't know what the instructions advise as regards motor/prop/speed controller/battery etc but I would have all those decided before you start building. This will greatly help with component layouts internally as well as initial ballasting tests. For that you should put the completed hull in the bath and then add weights until it is down to the correct waterline. You then take it out, remove the weights and weigh them so you know exactly how much weight you are playing with. The rest of the model will obviously take a good chunk of that and the battery is probably the biggest single item. You might also want to consider some fixed ballast, preferably at either end and leave yourself enough of a safety margin so you can add or remove some removable ballast for trimming.

Yes ballast the instructions dont say anything about ballast will i need to ballast it ?

Almost all boats will require ballast once all the working bits have been fitted.

A low drain 540 type motor with an 8.4v or 9.6v NimH battery will probably be OK such as this one:
