Model Boats 60th Anniversary Commemorative Issue
13th May sees the publication of our Special Commemorative Issue of Model Boats which celebrates 60 years of Model Boating.
Guest Editor Colin Bishop takes us on a personal Odyssey covering six decades of Model Boats and its predecessor Model Maker. Colin’s reminiscences introduce classic material from the past interposed with specially commissioned articles from favourite regular contributors to the magazine.
From the 1950s we have superb warship detail drawings plus a very traditional modelling material still in use today. The 1960s contribute a vehicle ferry scratch built scale project and a fast electric boat, both from the pen of the legendary Vic Smeed. The 1970s feature a controversial yacht design plus international power boating competition reporting. From the 1980s we include a superb military hovercraft project plus some useful information on scaling your models while the 1990s showcase the work of a master modeller and delve into the technicalities of propulsion. Moving into the 21st Century we cover some recent developments in popular yachting and include a comprehensive review of a modern tug kit.
The commissioned articles include a modern interpretation of a 1960s cabin cruiser by the ever popular Glynn Guest, a look at the development of kits over the last 60 years and a survey of commercial model boat steam over the same period. The history and present activities of the Model Yachting and Model Power Boat Associations are also covered together with a brief history of the magazine itself and a definitive survey of the model boating scene today by current Editor Paul Freshney who outlines his plans for the future direction of the magazine.
This Special Commemorative issue is likely to become a collector’s item and is only available from selected branches of W.H. Smith.

We welcome well written contributions from Website members on almost any aspect of Model Boating with a particular emphasis on practical hints, tips, experience and builds.
In order to maintain a consistent standard and format, all suggestions should first be sent to me by Personal Message for approval in principle. Only a very limited amount of time is available for editing contributions into a suitable format for placing on the website so it is important that the material is well presented, lucid and free from obvious spelling errors. I think it goes without saying that contributions should be illustrated by appropriate photos. I shall be happy to give advice on this.
The Member Contribution area offers space for short informative mini articles which would not normally find a place in Model Boats magazine. It is an opportunity for Website Members to freely share their expertise and experience but I am afraid that virtue is its own reward as there is no budget to offer more material recompense!
I look forward to receiving your suggestions.
