Thread originally started by David Marks and tidied up after going off topic - Colin

For my latest build, I was looking for a very light shade of Green and also Grey. Up to now I had always used Halfords rattle cans, but whilst in my local Wilko store I found both the Green and Grey in the shades that I wanted with the added bonus that these are satin finish straight from the can, where Halfords are gloss and normally need toning down a little. So I decide to also buy Wilko primer and also Satin Black to be used on the hull. So far I have only painted the hull and am very pleased with the results obtained. I sprayed a test piece before painting the model and all was well so I also evaluated the Wilko paint for compatibility with Halfords, Humbrol and Tamiya rattler can paints and no evidence of any problems e.g crazing etc. I always give my hulls a protective coat of PlastiKote clear satin lacquer and again no problems. I find the Plastikote product also to be very good and has a long (10 year) shelf life.

Interesting to hear of the general compatibility David but I have still been caught out on occasion and generally prefer to stick to the paints of one manufacturer to be on the safe side. Even then you need to be careful. For example, Halfords Clear Lacquer clearly has a very different solvent to their Matt and Satin lacquers and can cause bubbling on substrates that accept the latter.

We welcome well written contributions from Website members on almost any aspect of Model Boating with a particular emphasis on practical hints, tips, experience and builds.

In order to maintain a consistent standard and format, all suggestions should first be sent to me by Personal Message for approval in principle. Only a very limited amount of time is available for editing contributions into a suitable format for placing on the website so it is important that the material is well presented, lucid and free from obvious spelling errors. I think it goes without saying that contributions should be illustrated by appropriate photos. I shall be happy to give advice on this.

The Member Contribution area offers space for short informative mini articles which would not normally find a place in Model Boats magazine. It is an opportunity for Website Members to freely share their  expertise and experience but I am afraid that virtue is its own reward as there is no budget to offer more material recompense!

I look forward to receiving your suggestions.
